The use of magnetic fields in medicine continues to develop every day. This BBC article describes an application for using magnetic rods to straighten curved spines and reduces the number of surgical procedures needed particularly for children.
The principle may be similar to this technique used at the Texas Children’s Hospital to lengthen bone prosthesis. This procedure takes around 20 minutes and uses an external magnetic field to drive a motor which then turns a screw to lengthen the leg. See the video below…
